Natural history of organ failure in acute pancreatitis.

C J McKay1, A Buter.

Abstract

The majority of deaths from acute pancreatitis are a consequence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). In order to influence the outcome of this condition, we need to have a better understanding of the natural history of acute pancreatitis, particularly when complicated by MODS. This paper reviews the recent literature dealing with the natural history of acute pancreatitis and the relationship between MODS, pancreatic necrosis and mortality. Copyright 2003 S.
