The calculus of immunity: quantitating antigen processing.

Paul J Lehner1.

Abstract

Peptide ligands destined for binding MHC class I molecules are generated by the proteasome in the cytoplasm and transported to the endoplasmic reticulum for loading onto newly synthesized class I molecules. A new study now provides a quantitative analysis of how total protein turnover in the cell relates to the efficiency of generating peptide epitopes presented by class I molecules.
