Abstract
Progress in identifying, characterizing, and localizing the constituents of distinct membrane bound compartments has revealed a new level of intracellular subcompartmentation. Proteins and lipids are not uniformly distributed in a given organelle, and subdomains are formed by a combination of hierarchical assembly processes and protein exclusion. Thus, functionally distinct specializations of a given organelle are physically segregated to a greater extent than previously believed.Entities:
