Reading magazine articles about dieting and associated weight control behaviors among adolescents.

Jennifer Utter1, Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, Melanie Wall, Mary Story.

Abstract

The purpose was to examine the sociodemographic characteristics of adolescents who read magazine articles about dieting/weight loss and the relationship between reading these types of magazine articles and psychosocial well-being and weight control behaviors. Dieting-related magazine exposure was associated with indicators of psychosocial distress and unhealthy dieting; interventions that address media consumption should reach out to all youth regardless of ethnic and social backgrounds Copyright Society for Adolescent Medicine, 2003
