Keeping the human in human resources: finding and keeping star employees.

Nancy J Riesz1.

Abstract

People are an organization's most valuable asset. An enterprise's success is determined by the people selected to work there. Most laboratorians are drawn to the profession because of their analytical and organizational preferences. Typically, they focus on the task, and especially on the process of completing analyses. Many are promoted to supervisory or management positions because of technical expertise. Technical managers often forget, however, that people perform the assays. Invest time and energy in identifying the right people for your laboratory, in cultivating the environment necessary to attract great people, and in developing a positive, proactive plan to keep stars on your team. When you keep your focus on the human element, the bottom line will take care of itself.
