Neurotrophins and the control of axonal outgrowth.

K L Tucker1.

Abstract

The neurotrophins NGF, BDNF, NT-3, and NT-4/5 are well known for their neuron survival-promoting functions. This review focuses upon a less-investigated function of this gene family, namely that of controlling the growth of axons in vivo. Recent evidence is discussed that reveals a definitive requirement for neurotrophin signaling in the elongation of peripheral nerves during embryonic development.
