Abstract
The oral glucose tolerance test was carried out in 58 schizophrenics under long-term treatment with different neuroleptic drugs. 74% of the patients showed hyperglycemic reactions. The results did not show any correlation to the age of the patients. The oral glucose tolerance test using 100 g of glucose is recommended as routine procedure instead of the unreliable results of the fasting blood sugar determination. Several hypotheses related to the action of neuroleptics on glucose metabolism are discussed. The authors suggest that glucose tolerance tests and body weight controls should be carried out regularly under long-term neuroleptic treatment.Entities:
