J Han, Y Liu.

Abstract

"This paper attempts to present the concept of 'birth number base' as a reflection of the fecundity of women, explain the methods of determining the base, and its application." The birth number base is defined as the number of births in a given year when the total fertility rate is one. The concept is applied to Chinese data from the 1 per 1,000 population survey of 1982 to project the number of births that will have to be prevented in the future if China is to reach its population targets. excerpt
