Suicide in mood disordered children and adolescents.

This article reviews the risk factors for fatal and nonfatal suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. Numerous empirical studies suggest that mood disorders are among the most important risk factors for youth suicidal behavior. In addition, other psychosocial factors increase risk for youth suicidal behavior independent of mood disorders. Prevention strategies for suicidal behavior should incorporate methods to identify children and adolescents who suffer from major depressive, dysthymic, and bipolar disorders. Such strategies should identify children and adolescents who have a history of suicidal ideation and/or suicide attempts.
