Female genital mutilation and reproductive outcome.

Y M Kasim1, I F Abdul, O R Balogun.

Abstract

One hundred and thirty cases of obstructed labour were managed amongst 1,860 deliveries over a period of 2 years. 34 cases were due to acquired gynaetraesia following female genital mutilation in infancy and childhood. This paper highlights the magnitude, prevalence of this negative traditional practice and the effect on reproduction. Measures to reducing this preventable cause of maternal mortality are suggested.
