The advocacy movement in gynecologic oncology.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To review the development of the advocacy movement in gynecologic oncology. DATA SOURCES: Professional journals, texts, newspapers, organization newsletters and briefs, and internet web sites.
CONCLUSIONS: Advocacy in gynecology oncology has grown tremendously in the past 5 years. Advocacy groups offer information and resources to patients and family members; other groups target public policy and federal funding. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Nursing must remain involved in all aspects of patient advocacy and partner with leading advocacy movements to effect health care change.
