Abstract

GUIDELINES: A. Because anaemia is relatively common after kidney transplantation, regular screening and careful evaluation of its causes are recommended. In many cases, post-transplant anaemia is caused by allograft dysfunction. The use of purine synthesis inhibitors (azathioprine and MMF), ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists may frequently cause post-transplant anaemia. Anaemia is reversible after withdrawing the offending agent. Haemolytic anaemia may develop in transplant recipients. B. Treatment of anaemia should follow the European best practice guidelines for treatment of anaemia in chronic renal failure.
