Overview of the innervation of the lung.

Maria G Belvisi1.

Abstract

The autonomic nervous system controls many aspects of airway function, including regulation of airway smooth-muscle tone, mucus secretion from submucosal glands and surface epithelial goblet cells, vascular permeability and blood flow. Recent data suggest that enhanced neural activity may play a key role in the symptomatology and pathophysiology of airway inflammatory diseases.
