Epidemiology of cancer of the stomach with special reference to its recent decrease in Japan.

Statistics showing a significant decline in stomach cancer death rate in Japan are presented. The decline was most striking in cancer of the pylorus, compared to other anatomical sites, and in metropolitan areas, compared to rural areas. A striking dietary change, especially of milk and milk products, was considered to be the possible reason for such decline, although some of the decrease must be attributed to the active nationwide program of early detection of stomach cancer.
