Early detection and treatment of melanoma: update 2000.

Risk factors for the development of melanoma, early detection, biopsy technique, and treatment recommendations are discussed. Survival depends upon the stage at the time of diagnosis; thus, early detection of thin melanoma limited to the skin's surface enhances survival.
