Building the emergency department of the future: philosophical, operational, and physical dimensions.

Joanne Ingalls McKay1.

Abstract

The challenge to building emergency departments of the future goes beyond just physical design planning. Equally important considerations include the philosophical and operational dimensions that go hand in hand with the physical space. Form needs to follow function for efficiencies and best practice outcomes to be truly enhanced. It is critical to address philosophical issues internally in order for ED staff to be fully engaged and empowered to create superior emergency care environments. The delivery of best practice emergency care by the best staff in the best physical environment is the goal.
