In the context of a German-wide project establishing oncologic palliative clinics, a discussion has been started dealing with the specific requirements of the health Community. As a result of this discussion, the question as to the possible differences in quality and quantity of stress has arisen. An empiric case study has been undertaken in a Special oncologic clinic with a palliative ward. The following phenomenon were investigated: stress level according to the Maslach Burnout Inventory twice within a period of two years, coping strategies, and the design of the work place. The differences in stress between the groups resulted in only specific differences, but a distinct drop in levels of stress was recognized in proportion to the level of professional competence. Relations between conditions in the work place, coping skills, and subjective perception of stress offer many opportunities for health promoting interventions in palliative wards, namely increasing Special competences of the nursing staff and improving work conditions.
