The importance of quality assurance in surgical oncology in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

M L Landheer1, P Therasse, C J van de Velde.

Abstract

The available literature is reviewed concerning the relationship between surgery related factors and the variety in outcomes in the treatment of colorectal cancers. Wide variations were found in all aspects. Evidence was found that an improvement in the quality of surgical procedure could have major implications on the prognosis and quality of life of colorectal cancer patients. Consequently, these findings might imply a considerable change in cancer treatment strategies because the routine use of adjuvant therapies could be questioned.
