Abstract
Epithelial organs such as the vertebrate hair control periodic self-renewal by regulating the growth of progenitor cells. Recent studies implicate Sonic hedgehog target gene induction in the growth of multipotent hair follicle epithelium and the development of a variety of hair follicle tumors such as basal cell carcinomas. These studies suggest Sonic hedgehog signaling may regulate progenitor cells in other organs.Entities:
