Abstract
This article reviews the epidemiology of running injuries, the rationale and application of custom foot orthoses for running, and the design and material choices for fabrication in one laboratory. In an age of evidence-based medicine, much research must be done to look further at foot orthotic efficacy and how these devices contribute to an injury management plan. When designing custom foot orthoses for running, the differences between walking and running mechanics must be considered. Choices of the foot care specialist depend on patient body habitus, foot type, biomechanical scenario, and desired functional performance expectations.Entities:
