Abstract
A comprehensive derivation is presented of normal form maps for grazing bifurcations in piecewise smooth models of physical processes. This links grazings with border-collisions in nonsmooth maps. Contrary to previous literature, piecewise linear maps correspond only to nonsmooth discontinuity boundaries.
