Abstract
Anemia is common in patients with hematological malignancy. Most patients will have their anemia attributed to the anemia of chronic disease. The anemia of chronic disease is caused by cytokine mediated suppression of erythropoiesis and low serum erythropoietin levels are found in the majority of patients with cancer. Many of these anemic patients will be symptomatic with fatigue. Data from many studies indicates that treatment of anemic patients with erythropoietin will increase their hemoglobin concentration, decrease transfusion need and also improve their quality of life. A recent study also suggests that improving the hemoglobin level may improve the patients' prognosis but this finding needs to be confirmed.Entities:
