Abstract
Hypertension is the most common of the cardiovascular risk factors. Although its risks have been known for decades, hypertension remains inadequately diagnosed and undertreated. Better understanding of the pathophysiology of hypertension, including the role of the renin-angiotensin system, has led to the development of new approaches for patient management. Compared with traditional antihypertension treatments, angiotensin II receptor antagonists may offer more effective treatment and an improved side effect profile. These agents also may have an important treatment role in other cardiovascular conditions for which ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed. As clinical trial data are showing, the full potential of these drugs has yet to be determined.Entities:
