Health promotion for inner-city minority elders.

K L Wieck1.

Abstract

Older people living in large metropolitan areas are often trapped in deteriorating communities and must learn to survive in difficult conditions. Project CAPABLE (Community Advocacy Promoting and Building Lifelines for Elders) provides a haven for 55-year-olds and older who live in a low-income, largely Hispanic neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Using a health-promotion model, Project CAPABLE provides health-promotion and case management services to help these older people remain in their homes and empowers them to assume an active role in their own health promotion.
