P Seo1, C F Locke.

Abstract

AUDIENCE: This article is intended for primary care providers who care for patients requiring anticoagulation therapy. GOAL: To provide the reader with a basic understanding of the pharmacology and uses of low molecular weight heparin, including its potential to reduce the length of hospitalization for a variety of indications.
OBJECTIVES: 1. To describe the pharmacology of low molecular weight heparin. 2. To outline studies examining the use of low molecular weight heparin for the treatment of deep venous thrombosis and acute coronary syndromes. 3. To discuss the cost-effectiveness of low molecular weight heparins, as well as therapeutic considerations associated with their use. 4. To discuss the possible use of low molecular weight heparin in patients with mechanical prosthetic valves.
