Abstract
Probably no other diagnostic interpretive technique has revolutionized pulmonary medical practice in so short a time as flexible bronchofiberscopy. This state of the art review deals with flexible bronchofiberscopy, as well as comparisons to rigid bronchoscopic techniques. Historic development, specifications, indications, contraindications, sterilization of the instrument, and complications of these methods are discussed. Accessory procedures to bronchofiberscopy including biopsy, brushing, lavage, foreign body extraction, selective bacterial cultures, and research applications are considered. Finally, recommendations are made as to the training of a physician who performs bronchofiberscopy.Mesh:
