Abstract
Sleep is a complex, highly organized state that is fundamental to life. And yet, many functions of sleep remain to be discovered and understood. The past 50 years of modern sleep research clearly indicate what sleep is not--simply a resting brain, as popular notions and behavioral observations might suggest. This review will describe normal sleep physiology and its regulation as well as the major disorders of sleep and their underlying pathophysiology.Mesh:
