The use of inhaled corticosteroids in adults with asthma.

.

Abstract

Inhaled corticosteroids have now been used for the treatment of asthma for over 25 years. They have largely replaced oral corticosteroids for the prevention of asthma symptoms and asthma attacks, and for most patients they have become the first line of preventive drug therapy. We recently discussed the role of inhaled corticosteroids in the management of childhood asthma. Here, we review their place in the management of adults with asthma. A forthcoming article will review the various types of inhaler now available for delivering drugs for asthma.
