Abstract
In early ontogeny, hematopoiesis is closely associated with angiogenesis. This article reviews recent studies on the role of angiogenic factors that regulate the proliferation and differentiation of endothelial cells in promoting hematopoietic cell growth and studies on the ability of hematopoietic cytokines to affect several endothelial cell functions. The findings in all these studies support the hypothesis formulated at the beginning of this century that a common ancestral cell, the hemangioblast, gives rise to cells of both the endothelial and the hematopoietic lineages.Entities:
