Figure 1Autoreactive T cells that are not eliminated or rendered unresponsive by tolerance mechanisms normally remain quiescent in the periphery. Priming events that trigger their differentiation into effector T cells can initiate autoimmune responses. The function of regulatory T cells is to inhibit these responses and prevent autoimmunity.
