Abstract
During transhiatal esophagectomy, the esophagus is generally safely and easily dissected posteriorly. However, in 1% to 2% of patients, an aberrant right subclavian artery passes between the esophagus and spine. We demonstrate that transhiatal esophagectomy may be safely performed in these patients when recognition and careful dissection are performed. Thoracic surgeons must be aware of this anomaly in order to prevent laceration of the aberrant right subclavian artery with catastrophic hemorrhage.Entities:
