Two hospitals report: the pros and cons of 12-hour shifts.

L Hasan-Stein.

Abstract

Earlier last year, paediatric nurses and delivery suite midwives at two North Island hospitals took part in six-month trials working 12-hour shifts. In both cases the trials were successful and have resulted in a decision by staff to continue working longer hours. Staff at both hospitals report on the trials and the introduction of 12-hour shifts in their areas.
