Abstract
Acidocalcisomes are novel acidic Ca2+ storage organelles found in trypanosomatids and apicomplexan parasites, abundant in the intracellular stages of these parasites, and characterized by their high electron density, and high content of phosphorus, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and Zn2+. A number of energy-utilizing pumps and exchangers have been found in these organelles, which underlines their importance in the homeostasis of different elements, as discussed here by Roberto Docampo and Silvia Moreno.Entities:
