[The best timing of silicone oil removal].

Y Jiang1, X Li.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to approach the best timing of silicone oil removal after its injection into the vitreous cavity in vitrectomy for reattachment of retinal detachment.
METHODS: The silicone removal was performed on 100 eyes of 96 patients, and the incidence of silicone complications was analyzed statistically.
RESULTS: The complication incidence increased with the time of silicone oil removal delayed. There are statistically significant differences in the complication incidence not only between the group with silicone oil removal within 3 months and the group with the removal later than 5 months, but also between the group with the removal within 5 months and the group with the removal later than 5 months. The complication incidence was 100% in the group in which the silicone oil was removed later than 18 months after its injection.
CONCLUSIONS: The silicone oil should be removed no longer than 6 months after its injection, and the best timing to remove the oil is 2 to 3 months.
