Abstract
Introduced to the commercial market 40 years ago, fluoride dentifrice now accounts for nearly all dentifrice purchased in the United States. During this same time, the prevalence and severity of dental caries has declined while dental fluorosis prevalence has increased. While the caries decline can be largely attributed to widespread fluoride dentifrice use, as well as many other sources of fluoride, several recent studies have attributed much of the increase in fluorosis prevalence to early use of fluoride dentifrice. This paper reviews these studies, as well as the efficacy of fluoride dentifrices with lower fluoride concentrations. Finally, recommendations regarding fluoride dentifrice to maintain caries prevention and reduce the risk of dental fluorosis are presented.Entities:
