.

Abstract

The number of adolescent and young adult suicides is substantial and is increasing. The rate has tripled over the past 30 years, making suicide the third leading cause of death in the 15- to 19-year-old age group. The authors discuss the demographic characteristics, risk factors, biologic markers, prevention, "postvention," and treatment of the suicide among adolescents.
