Recent public health issues such as the Katie Beckett and Baby Doe cases have had a significant impact on the family. The U.S. Public Health Service provided a waiver that made it possible for Katie Beckett's family to receive funds to provide ventilator support for Katie at home. Since that action, many other families have been able to receive aid to care for their handicapped children at home.
