Abstract
This study shows that the elderly living in the community and covered by Medicare and Medicaid have a higher proportion of older persons, of minority races, and of women and are in poorer health than other aged persons covered only by Medicare. The noninstitutionalized poor elderly population use more health care services (especially inpatient hospital care) and have much higher per capita health care expenses compared to those covered by Medicaid. There were also large disparities in education and income. The study indicates that the Medicare program provides substantially more financial protection for all elderly persons living in the community than for the total elderly population.Entities:
