[Odontogenic pyogenic infections. 10-year analysis].

J Piesold, S Vent, S Schönfeldt.

Abstract

All patients of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Erfurt Hospital with odontogenic pyogenic infections have been analyzed in a retrospective study over a period of 10 years, from 1987 to 1997. This included questions concerning frequency, seriousness and treatment of these infections, social changes in the environ prove effects about the referral behaviour and the course. Odontogenic pyogenic infections are mixed infections. Aerobic agents such as hemolytic streptococcuses and staphylococcuses as well as anaerobic bacteria and fungi can be involved. Cephalosporine, aminobenzylpenicillin in combination with beta-lactamase inhibitor, alcylaminopenicillin and lincosamide are recommended based on analysis of infection resistance as first choice medications with carbapeneme as a reserve antibiotic.
