ASHP therapeutic position statement on smoking cessation. American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

.

Abstract

Smoking continues to be the single most important preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Pharmacists, in collaboration with other health care providers, have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to addressing this major public health problem. ASHP supports AHCPR's guidelines for smoking cessation. ASHP encourages all health care providers to actively promote smoking cessation and become participants in the provision of smoking-cessation programs or tobacco treatment interventions. Because a majority of smokers start smoking when they are less than 18 years old, emphasis must also be given to the prevention of smoking by children and adolescents.
