Abstract
From an analysis of the factors that could contribute to the development of post-traumatic TMJ ankylosis, it is evident that a number of different conditions are probably operant. Based on clinical and experimental findings, however, it is suggested that of primary importance is the location of the meniscus in relation to the fracture site. It is proposed that the meniscus normally serves as a barrier to prevent fusion of the distal fragment with the glenoid fossa, and that ankylosis generally occurs if this relationship is not maintained. Based on this concept, possible modifications in the management of fractures of the condyloid process are suggested.Entities:
